Case Law Deep Research: Tips [Lawyer]

These basics apply to any artificial intelligence deep research product for case law (i.e. AI researches multiple rounds and writes an analysis):

  • Tends to be good for: (1) a quick attempt to find a relevant case to get you started; (2) checking points which you have some intuition for; (3) a first survey of of cases which similar fact patterns.
  • Queries are in natural language, but it certainly helps, in your query, to hit the key words which are likely to be found in judgments you are looking for. If you didn't find anything the first time, rephrasing the query sometimes works.
  • If you intend to cite or rely on a case, always click in to check the proposition + cited paragraph is correct; and check Lexis/Westlaw to see that the case hasn't been overturned/disapproved.
  • Sometimes, the analysis of the artificial intelligence is off if the answer is not too clear, or there isn't really an answer in the cases it surfaced. The artificial intelligence might try too hard to answer anyway, and reads too much into a case.
